I have a plumbing emergency, what should I do?

What do you do when a plumbing emergency arises? The very first thing is to ensure it's safe, and hopefully not getting even worse. Electricity and water do not combine safely, so if you need to, turn the mains switch off at the power panel.

If there is still water leaking, turn off the water to the appliance or fixture if possible, or go straight to the main valve for your home. If you’re unable to locate the water valve to turn off, then you may want to try turning on all the cold taps inside and outside your house to depressurise the pipework and minimise the leak.

Once that’s done, give our plumber a ring, no matter what the day or time is. We’ll be with you promptly to fix the leak.

While you wait for our emergency plumber, clear away any significant things, clean up any water, and put a container to catch drips. You should also turn off the hot water heating if the main water is turned off.

Help, I don’t know where the main water shutoff valve is!

You may have been shown it as a stopcock, isolating valve or toby. This valve is normally located on the boundary near the road, usually under a blue or black plastic cover.
